Kittichai "A" Sojiphan First Blog ^^

Sawasdee everyone,

"Sawasdee" means "Hello" in Thailand. My name is Kittichai Sojiphan. My family and friends usually called me "A", my nickname. I also have Chinese name, Zhen You Ming. I was born in Lampang, a city in the northern Thailand and lived there for 15 years. My hometown is famous for horse carriage in which tourists always enjoy having a ride around the city. However, I only get to be on the horse carriage once in my whole life, about 20 years ago. I came to USA for the first time during a summer after my 7th grade with groups of thai youths for cultural exchange in USA for 40 days during which we spent time living with American host families, visiting elementary schools, traveling to different places, and visiting a Thai community in Chicago area. The most favorite part is to visit the American schools in which the educational systems and activities student participate is very different from school system in Thailand.

I came back to USA again after finishing my high school in Bangkok in 2000. I spent the first year at a preparatory school called Pomfret school in Connecticut. After that, I study at Northwestern University for my bachelor degrees in Materials Science and Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering. Then I came here for a M.S. degree in Welding Engineering since Autumn 2005. After graduation hopefully in June 2007, I would like to continue Ph.D. education in USA.

During free time, I like watching TV, playing badminton, tennis, and sometimes basketball, or table tennis, and playing video games. My favorite TV programs are college football especially Ohio State and Northwestern or Big Ten conferences, and Tennis Grand Slam. My current favorite players are Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, and Martina Hingis. I also like watching Olympics Games and World Cup. I am cheering the German and English teams right now. I also join a small bible study group with the International Friendship Inc which some of you might heard of before on Friday evening. However, my study groups are not continuing during this summer. I love traveling especially to historical and natural places. I have dreamed of traveling on a cruise around the world to visit Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribean Seas and travel to South America and various parts of China and other coutries some day.

I am glad to get to know all of you and hopefully we will become good friends. Please feel free to call me "A" rather than my real name and if anything I can do for you like taking you to have Thai food, please let me know :)

Ming-Wei's HW#01

I am Ming-Wei Chen, a citizen of Taiwan and currently a graduate student of Chemical Physics program in the Ohio State University. My research interests are molecular spectroscopy and physical chemistry, especially the structure of reaction intermediates, radicals, ions, and natural molecules. Besides science, I also have widespread hobbies such as reading books and writing articles which are not related to science, exercises, tasting and making coffee, and so on.

It was my father, to whom I owe my interest in science. He ignited my interests in science by showing the beauty of white light from sun, split into a rainbow when passed through a prism. This made me see the real beauty in science and urged me to explore the essence of various forms of matter. The knowledge in Chemistry and Physics revealed to me the various facets of the world and even the universe. A study on the hydrogen atom spectra and uncertainty principle by which I was affected, made me understand what I have learnt till then was merely an iota from a vast quantity of science, which made me thrive more into the components of matter, the roots of universe, the philosophy of everything, etc.

Living and growing in Taiwan give me a lot of opportunities to experience the sciences, technologies and cultures. My homeland is an agriculture region with farms and streams, always provides a place for me to leave jobs and competitions temporarily. Friends from different cultures and majors in cities where I was grown, educated, and lived, would like to share thoughts and experiences of life with I. Therefore, by discussing with my family and friends, I can have the view of world like traveling, and develop many skills such as cooking, making coffee, photography, etc. Since technologies in Taiwan are highly developing, which makes our life more convenient, people lived in this island are also familiar with the advanced applications of technologies.

My goal in studying here is to attain a Ph.D., which would give me an opportunity to actively participate and contribute to stretching the boundaries in Science. I also wish to advance my study in the future, with few years of post-doctoral experience, as I think learning has no ending. My effort to learn and study is to advance myself in science and life, since there have no end in learning, mine will be also endless.

I believe all experiences I have are elements of life. Including but not merely science, life is beautiful because of varieties of experiences to feel, to love.

Joel's Welcoming Post

Welcome to our class blog. I hope you will enjoy this term. I have been teaching here at Ohio State for 10 years. I have a phd in rhetoric from Carnegie Mellon University and a MA is esl education from the University of Michigan. I live with my wife and 7-year old daughter. I was one of the first Americans who went to China in 1979 and was one of the first to marry a Chinese citizen. It was very difficult in those days since you had to get permission from the Chinese communist party, which wasn't easy.

My dissertation was on academic writing in Chinese and English. I don't speak much Chinese and my wife had to help me. The first article I published from my dissertation I put her name on to acknowledge this help, even though she works in software development.

I have been been published on plagiarism and in technology and two articles, one on email and one on evaluative writing that were based on 10802. I just received a contract to publish a book on technology and second language composition.

In addition to 10802, I coordinate 106 and teach a course in publishing research, which you are invited to take when you are ready to publish.

I hope you enjoy this course and I am looking forward to working with you.
